As interim development director, I led an ambitious acquisitions programme by Lewisham Homes. The council provided a loan whilst Lewisham Homes invested its company reserves to acquire second hand flats, maisonettes and houses to prevent homelessness and provide well-managed temporary accommodation for homeless families placed by the council, as an alternative to Bed and Breakfast or other emergency overnight accommodation.
This scheme meets a pressing immediate need, saves the council money, gives families more stability and a healthier home, as well as giving the company an asset base against which it can borrow for its own development activity in future. In the year to April 2016, we bought 50 flats, including 8 flats above the 99p store (now Poundland) in Catford.
