Following the devastating Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017, I led the high rise fire safety response for Tower Hamlets Council and took on a prominent role with MHCLG and the LGA in promoting the use of Housing Act 2004 enforcement powers to ensure the removal and remediation of unsafe Aluminium Composite Material (ACM) cladding from buildings over 18m high.
I regularly attended the Ministerial Taskforce on fire safety and contributed to a series of MHCLG/LGA best practice events. With over 50 high rise blocks clad in ACM, Tower Hamlets has had significantly more hazardous buildings to deal with than any other council in the UK. I supported the Mayor John Biggs in meeting developers and residents to press for speedy remedial action and to add weight to the Government's call for leaseholders not to be charged for these urgent improvement works.
